Rolex Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller
When Rolex Testimonee Bryson DeChambeau lifted the U.S. Open trophy accompanied by an Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller on his left wrist; this was a significant moment for Rolex with double cause for celebration, as 2020 also marks its 40th anniversary as the Official Timekeeper of this revered tournament.
Widely regarded to be one of golf’s “toughest challenge”, this year’s tournament showcased DeChambeau’s extreme precision and accuracy, qualities that are reflected in Rolex’s watchmaking endeavours. The Californian was the only player in the field to break par on the final day of play.
Almost in tandem with DeChambeau’s historic win at Winged Foot, Rolex introduces the newest version of the Oyster Perpetual Sky-Dweller in 18 ct yellow gold. A frequent traveller’s delight, the elegant Sky-Dweller has a distinctive dual time zone display and annual calendar.
The 24-hour format reference time is shown via an off-centre disc, while the local time is read conventionally. The annual calendar, named Saros, automatically differentiates between 30- and 31-day months, and 12 apertures around the dial’s circumference indicate the months of the year. The bright black, sunray-finish dial with hands and hour markers in 18 ct yellow gold sits within the refined profile of the 42 mm Oyster case.
Of note is the Oysterflex bracelet, adorning the Sky-Dweller for the first time. It combines the robustness and reliability of a titanium and nickel alloy bracelet with the flexibility, comfort and aesthetics of a high-performance elastomer strap. Enhancing comfort and wearability are longitudinal cushions on the inside of the bracelet. Securing the bracelet is the folding Oysterclasp in 18 ct yellow gold with the Rolex Glidelock extension system that allows for easy re-sizing of the bracelet up to 15mm.
As the most complicated timepiece from the house of Rolex, the new version is equipped with the fluted, rotatable bezel unique to the Sky-Dweller, used to set the watch in conjunction with the Ring Command system. The Oyster case, waterproof to 100 metres, is crafted from a solid piece of 18 ct yellow gold.
Keeping precise time is the calibre 9001, one of the most complex movements entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. The self-winding calibre features a blue Parachrom hairspring that is up to 10 times more precise than a traditional hairspring in case of shocks, as well as 72 hours of power reserve.
Like all Rolex watches, the Sky-Dweller carries the Superlative Chronometer certification, which guarantees excellent performance on the wrist.
