LoveGolfSg Junior Golfers Raise $33,203
As part of LoveGolfSg, junior golfers in Singapore did themselves proud in recent fund-raising efforts where they pledged to run a total of 203 kilometres for charity, raising a total of $33,203 for the #YNWA Community Chest campaign.
Why 203km? The number was inspired by national golfer James Leow’s gold medal winning score of 203 at the 2019 SEA Games. Leow, who was honoured that his winning score served as inspiration for the youngsters, was present to explain the goals of the campaign saying, “We’re fortunate enough to be able to play golf, which is not a cheap sport for many people. And so teaching younger golfers to give back to the community is a very crucial thing.”
The #YNWA campaign was started by Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan-Jin and supported by the Official Liverpool Supporters Club Singapore and Official Liverpool Supporters Club Singapore East, and funds raised will be channelled to over 80 social service agencies supporting those disadvantaged by the COVID-19 pandemic in Singapore.
As young as seven years old, the junior golfers were so enthusiastic in their efforts that they ran beyond their designated distance of 203 km and clocked in a total of 400km instead, culminating in the final amount of $33,203 presented to Speaker Tan at the cheque presentation ceremony held at the Laguna National Golf and Country Club. In turn, Speaker Tan presented green fee vouchers sponsored by the club – ever supportive of junior golf – to 12 of the young golfers who managed to raise the most donations, had the most number of donors or made the most creative fund-raising videos. He commented, “It’s really good to see our sports boys and girls chipping in to make a difference. In our own small ways, however young you are, you have an ability to reach out and inspire others.
