Asian Tour Yearbook: 2023

“and to Asian Tour as well for all the Asian Tour starts and invitations. “I definitely learned a lot and the boost from the Kyi Hla Han Future Champions Award really gave me opportunities that allowed me to focus on my game, grow, and play the best I could.” Playing all four rounds in the Saudi International, which featured an all-star cast that included Major winners and LIV Golf stars Brooks Koepka, Cam Smith and Bryson DeChambeau, was the highlight of the year, he feels. Incredible considering that was his first event of the year. “Playing on the Asian Tour is definitely on a different level. It’s definitely a higher level, more competitive. I’m not saying the Asian Development Tour is not competitive, but from what I experienced just in terms of the skill level, these guys are able to perform in such extreme conditions. It’s amazing, it’s one hell of an experience for any player that will have the opportunity that I had to experience.” And what did he learn the most? “I think just learning how to score and making the best of the opportunity that you get. Obviously on Tour there are many different types of players: you have players that hit it short but accurate, you have people that hit it long like Kieran Vincent and who just bomb it out there and have a good short game. “So, I think it’s just a mix and match of what your ability is, and to try to make the best out of it as well. And definitely managing your game on the golf course and not making big mistakes out there.” Said Marlene Han, Kyi Hla’s wife: “We are very proud of Ervin’s achievements. Winning his full Asian Tour card through successful performance is exactly what Kyi Hla would have coached Ervin to do. Kyi Hla always encouraged young players to hone their skills, play to their strengths and perform to the best of their ability and Ervin certainly did that! We wish Ervin the best and will certainly be following him.” Kyi Hla, who passed away in February of 2022, was a tireless supporter of the next generation and will no doubt be very proud of young master Chang. 165
