Callaway JAWS MD5 Raw Wedges

28 Oct 2020

Callaway touts the Jaws MD5 wedges as having the most aggressive grooves in golf, increasing both spin and total control on full shots and less. A claim backed up by re-looking the groove shape and putting a new spin on groove design literally.

Spin that is now 10 percent more than its predecessor, coupled with a slightly lower launch for more control especially on partial wedge shots; the control coming from higher contact friction since the ball isn’t sliding up the face as much.

Expanding on the current line-up, Callaway introduces the Raw edition of the Jaws MD5 wedges, with the matte finish preferred by tour players as well as several new grind options resulting from tour feedback. The surest sign of approval? PGA Tour players Marc Leishman and Si Woo Kim have already bagged them.

Callaway says the raw finish reduces glare and creates a popular look that many Tour Pros prefer. That look is the patina of rust that develops over time with continued usage of the un-plated mild carbon steel head. Rust was once thought to be a wedge’s friend, the roughness of which was believed to improve the friction between ball and clubhead, thus increasing spin for extra bite on the greens.

The real deal here is the new grind and sole options developed by wedge maestro Roger Cleveland through his work with Tour players.

The new T Grind (in 58° and 60°) has a crescent sole with a lower bounce angle of 8°. Its slightly thicker topline raises the centre of gravity higher to create the better player desired lower launch with more spin.

The X Grind (in 54°and 56°) is a higher bounce wide-sole option with heel, toe and trailing-edge relief for the creative shotmaker. Previously available in only the higher lofts of 58° and 60°, the grind now covers the lower sand wedge lofts as well.

The Jaws MD5 Raw wedges come in 13 loft/bounce options in right-handed, and only three in left-handed, with lofts ranging from 50 to 62 degrees. The stock shaft is a 115-gram True Temper Tour Issue steel.
